چکیده

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the impact of incoherent pumping fields and quantum interference induced by incoherent pumping fields on the Kerr nonlinearity in a three-level asymmetric semiconductor quantum well system. It is found that Kerr nonlinearity is so sensitive to the rate of incoherent pumping fields, but insensitive to the quantum interference induced by incoherent pumping fields. In addition, it is demonstrated that an enhanced Kerr nonlinearity with reduced absorption can be achieved just via the strength of Fanotype interference and without applying any coherent laser field. The obtained results are very different from the conventional schemes which coherent coupling fields are used to control the Kerr nonlinearity. This advantages make our electronic medium much more practical than its atomic counterpart due to its flexible design and the controllable interference strength.

Long wavelength enhanced Kerr nonlinearity via Fano-type interference in semiconductor quantum wells

The linear and nonlinear behaviors of susceptibility via tunable Fano-type interference, based on intersubband transitions in asymmetric double quantum wells (QWs) driven coherently by a probe laser field, are analyzed. It is shown that Kerr nonlinearity can be controlled competently by tuning the energy splitting of the two excited states (the coupling strength of the tunneling), i.e. Fano-typ...

Large optical gain from four-wave mixing instabilities in semicon- ductor quantum wells

Based on a microscopic many-particle theory, we predict large optical gain in the probe and background-free four-wave mixing directions caused by excitonic instabilities in semiconductor quantum wells. For a single quantum well with radiative-decay limited dephasing in a typical pump-probe setup we discuss the microscopic driving mechanisms and polarization and frequency dependence of these ins...

Tunable optical delay via carrier induced exciton dephasing in semiconductor quantum wells.

We report the experimental realization of a tunable optical delay by exploiting unique incoherent nonlinear optical processes in semiconductors. The tunable optical delay takes advantage of the strong Coulomb interactions between excitons and free carriers and uses optical injection of free carriers to broaden and bleach an exciton absorption resonance. Fractional delay exceeding 200% has been ...

Mid/far-infrared photodetectors based on quantum coherence in coupled quantum wells

We propose mid/far-infrared photodetectors based on coherent sum-frequency generation in a near-resonant cascade of interband and intersubband transitions in high optical nonlinearity asymmetric quantum well structures. Such structures can yield high detectivity and responsivity in the bandwidth of the order of 30% of a central frequency in the mid-infrared range. Resonant up-conversion detecto...

Giant Kerr nonlinearities and slow optical solitons in coupled double quantum-wells

We show the formation of slow optical solitons in the asymmetric coupled double quantumwells (CQW) via a two-photon Raman resonance. With the consideration of real parameters in AlGaAs-based CQW, we indicate the possibility to have cancellation of the linear absorption and giant Kerr nonlinearities. With the controllable balance between dispersion and nonlinear effects in these solid-state base...
